Sat (87 pegs) Lower Tees

Kicking off the first weekend of the new Coarse Fishing Season, the 2nd annual LTAA James Cook Hospital Cup, sponsored by SG Petch Middlesbrough, attracted a big turnout of 87 competitors to help raise funds for Cancer care.

Staged on the Lower Tees between Ingleby to Bowesfield, sport was excellent despite clear conditions for this Tees curtain raiser and 23 double figured catches were recorded. Keith Ward of Ferryhill finished a surprised winner after pulling out unfancied peg 76 on the end of the deeps, opposite Bassleton Woods. Opting for groundbait feeder with worm and maggot down the middle, Keith put together 6 bream, 4 skimmers and 3 eels for a comfortable 23.8.0 at the scales.

In runner up spot, Phil Noble of Darlington Angling Centre, pegged opposite the top of the wood on 94, adopted similar tactics but chose to fish a third out and netted 5 bream and 15 skimmers all on the worm totalling 19.12.0.

The weather was kind, given the recent rain, allowing for a good turn out. We also had a few close calls at the “hole-in-one” competition which gave our customers the chance to win a brand new Peugeot 107. Numerous other competitions took place on the day with some excellent prizes being won.

Simon Rees, Financial Director at SG Petch, said: “We were absolutely delighted with how our second annual Golf (Charity Shield) Day went – everyone including myself seemed to have a brilliant day and we were absolutely chuffed to get all 72 players present for the shotgun start; we raised nearly £3,000 at the Auction for Macmillan Cancer thanks to the generosity of all our guests. Congratulations to Paul Waterfield who won the event with a score of 45 Stableford points and we have already started planning to make next years event even bigger and better”.

If you want to take part in next years event (which is scheduled for mid June 2012) please contact Simon Rees via e-mail at simonrees@sgpgroup.co.uk and we will confirm your entry nearer the time.

Results of the competitions are below

1st place “best player on the day” – Paul Waterfield
2nd place – Graham Pilkington

David Jones, St Teresa’s Hospice Fundraising Manager, said: “Support from businesses is especially valuable to us not just because of the practical help they can offer but also as fresh groups of people to recruit from to take part in our various events. We look forward to working with SG Petch over the coming year.”

If your business would like to adopt St Teresa’s Hospice please contact David Jones on 01325 254 321.
